What Is Periodontal Maintenance?
Periodontal maintenance is an ongoing treatment that helps control gum disease after it has been brought under control through procedures such as scaling and root planing, pocket reduction or gum surgery. Unlike a regular dental cleaning, which focuses on removing plaque and tartar from above the gumline, periodontal maintenance targets areas both above and below the gumline to prevent bacteria from causing new infections or bone loss.

Osgood Cosmetic & Family Dentistry provides periodontal maintenance program in North Andover, MA. Call to learn more and schedule an appointment.
What It Involves
During a periodontal maintenance visit, your hygienist will:
- Carefully clean around the teeth and beneath the gums to the depth of the pockets.
- Check for signs of inflammation, bleeding, or pocket depth changes
- Polish the teeth and review home care techniques
Frequency
These visits are typically recommended every 3–4 months, depending on your individual needs and how well your gums are responding to treatment.
If you have deeper pockets that regular cleaning cannot reach, or have had gum surgery, deep cleaning in the past, you will need to see your hygienist every 3-4 months, and that would involve a periodontal maintenance visit.
