If a tooth has more extensive decay, a dental crown may be the ideal aesthetic and functional restorative solution.
Osgood Cosmetic & Family Dentistry provides dental crowns in North Andover, MA. Call to learn more and schedule an appointment.
The first step in the process is to take an impression or intraoral scan that will be used to make a model of the teeth and bite. This allows the crown to be made to look and function like your natural tooth. The tooth will then be prepped, with the decayed areas being removed. An impression or intraoral scan of the prepped tooth will be made so that the final crown will fit properly when it is placed.
Sometimes the final crown can be placed on the same day but other times a temporary crown will be placed while your final restoration is being created.
There are four common types of crowns:
Ceramic
Gold Alloys
Base Metal Alloys
Zirconia
Zirconia is a state-of-the-art ceramic material renowned for its exceptional strength, longevity, and natural beauty. Often regarded as the “gold standard” in modern restorative dentistry, zirconia offers a perfect balance of durability, precision, and elegance.
Because zirconia remains strong even in thinner layers, it allows for a more conservative preparation — preserving more of your natural tooth structure while still delivering superior protection and aesthetics, creating a metal-free, biocompatible solution that enhances both the health and function of your smile.
Porcelain
Porcelain is a beautifully refined ceramic material prized for its lifelike translucency and natural shine, making it an ideal choice for cosmetic and restorative dental treatments. Designed to closely mimic the appearance of real enamel, porcelain restorations reflect light naturally, blending seamlessly with your surrounding teeth.
While incredibly aesthetic, porcelain also offers lasting strength and resistance to staining, allowing your smile to stay bright and vibrant for years. Each porcelain restoration is individually crafted to enhance your smile’s harmony, balance, and brilliance — achieving results that are both timeless and naturally beautiful.
